Dave somehow you come up with stats and graphs showing all sorts of correlations or not. Can you try this one: When have sanctions prevented a conflict or forced changes in behaviour?

Putin and Europe may not want the situation to escalate but the US definitely wants Russia to be engaged in Ukraine. Biden would be very happy with the development. Nord Stream 2 is put on hold and the independence of the two regions gives US a good reason to supply arms to Ukraine. It will use this opportunity to fight a proxy war with Russia.

That’s because fighting a proxy war is cheaper than fighting a direct war. Here I am simply extrapolating what US did when USSR invaded Afghanistan. Tbh I don’t see any country to supply troops to fight Russian soldiers on behalf of Ukraine. Also, no country other than the US has the courage to send arms to Ukraine.

Dear David,

How do you see the Nord Stream 2 will go?

David, my question is this – for descalation to happen, Putin surely needs to claim victory in his confrontation with the West? As far as I can see, he is not doing this. He has made such maximalist demands – that Ukraine is not a real country, that NATO should reverse its expansion – taking these two small parts of Ukraine already occupied by Russian proxies does not give him much.

Putin will present the independence of the 2 Russian speaking republics as a victory to his public at home. Not a great victory but a win in an impossible situation
