ASEAN not easy to invest. Investing in Vietnam has problems - https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/19/vietnams-market-risks-missing-upgrade-to-emerging-economy-status-2025.html
One of the issues with ASEAN is it is an economic grouping not a political grouping and each member tends to put their political interests first but my reading suggests all of Asean sees China as a far more complicated relationship than previously. Eyes wide open. They are very comfortable to let Australia be the SEAsia bad boy when it comes to China.
On Australia/China my reading is the Chinese are using the change of Government as a chance to reset relations without loosing face. The new Government is less loud in its condemnation of key Chinese policies but has not changed position on anything. In fact recently imposed travel restrictions on incoming Chinese visitors against health department advice. Bottoml…
Does it actually matter if US policy makes Europe and Japan poorer? The US has incredible control over media and communications. All the major social media platforms are from Silicon Valley, and the US will push to cancel TikTok. In the case of Covid and Ukraine, the MSM rushed to push the global corporate agenda and viciously blacklisted anyone who disagreed. No challenger to US hegemony will get any balanced reporting. This can only get worse if they pass laws on "hate speech" or any dissent against the greens or the pinks.
Any hint that the US is screwing over allies will be branded conspiracy theory. Even if the US is losing in trade, military hot spot, or tech competition,…
Not sure I agree on China trying to build better relationship with ASEAN countries - they are claiming territory to within 10s of miles of many of the key ASEAN players (including Indonesia) and decimating local fishing communities by forcibly stopping access to areas fished by these people for generations. https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/LIS150-SCS.pdf gives you the map of these claims.
Your comment about historical/cultural ties with ASEAN countries is I think also wide of the mark. A number of Asean countries have significant ethnic Chinese populations but in some cases these minorities have been subjected to considerable ethnic discrimination. Especially true in Malaysia where there was terrible massacres of Chinese in the 1960's and laws introduced and still in place today …
Tony, No doubt China's annual summer fishing ban in south east Asia continues to meet opposition by countries like Vietnam and the Philippines and that there has been little progress in resolving territorial disputes in South China Sea. However, it seems that most ASEAN countries have decided to not let these issues stop them from doing business with China. It is especially telling that even Australia seems to have decided to put its business and economic interests before other considerations. I have been amazed by the seeming thawing of the icy relationship between Canberra and Beijing in recent months. Can you help shed light on this? Is it just because of the change in government in Australia?
David, thanks for an excellent post. From an investment perspective is there an ETF that can benefit from the ASEAN current situation?
