Worth noting for context that there are more than twice as many police departments reporting the statistics as total offenses. I reckon that if you were to do a poll of people on the street they'd think that the numbers would be a lot bigger - particularly versus Asians given the amount of coverage that got last year.


Also, if you look at the offenses, basically the only thing that changed in 2020 was that intimidation went from the usual ~2,000 per year to over 4,000. Lots of people going around feeling more scared than usual in 2020. I think that is most likely the explanation.

Hi John, I think you are right. Also, Asians tend to be more shy and less likely to report hate crime incidents. Moreover, attacks on Asians are more of a 2021 than 2020 story so we should expect the number to rise sharply in the FBI’s report next year. David
