From reading this however, it seems like even this problem is being approached in a limited way. Chess computers became better than humans a while ago because they could see everything and calculate faster. It was only when they started using reinforcement learning techniques that the engines became qualitatively better however - being able to come up with strategic plans that were beyond human imagination.
What this sounds like is that cars are still doing the brute force approach, and while it is effective at reducing deaths caused by a lack of concentration, it is not qualitatively…
