Thanks, David. The idealist vs realist conception is useful but incomplete. In reality things aren't so binary and foreign policy decisions exist on a spectrum between these poles.

David, Obviously there is a continuous spectrum. Theories help us make sense of what otherwise might be perceived as random but they should not be seen as the beginning and the end. David
Is Ukraine a free country? Zelensky outlawed 11 opposition parties, banned three TV stations, and regularly harasses political dissidents. All of this is entirely ignored by the mainstream media. Recently, there was a story about an opposition journalist in Spain, Anatoly Shariy, that the SBU plotted to liquidate. Ukraine also has posted a blacklist, with such extremists as Glenn Greenwald, Rand Paul, and John Mearscheimer. Monitoring the flows of US weapons and aid to the Ukraine (Rand Paul's crime) is seen as a pro Russian act. The Ukranians would have us believe that the second most corrupt country in Europe (Russia is ranked first) can be trusted blindly with tens of billions of aid - possibly hundreds of billions when…
Let's hope that cooler minds prevail. I would think most Taiwanese have no desire to poke the dragon. Unfortunately, it is not the people who make this decision but the elites -- and in most countries, even democracies, the elite is divorced from what the majority want. And they always believe that degrees and status mean they know better, and their decisions always lead to more power, wealth, and influence for their cronies. Odd, how that is so rarely reported.
This was an excellent history lesson David. I love the realist v idealist comparisons and it makes sense of whats happened in my life. However, is it really true to say that both China and Russia do not have territorial expansionist intentions ? I'm thinking of Donbas and South China Sea. You are spot on that hegemony can only be preserved with military, technical and economic leadership - but are you saying that a blind eye should be turned on these two regions ?
US should strive to be great in the eyes of the rest of the world by taking care of its poor, invest in its young, and narrowing the racial divide at home. Let’s make America Great for the average American who deserve more attention from their elected leaders
